Assault
While violent crime - such as assault - is low compared to other crimes in Tacoma, it is always a good idea to follow basic safety precautions than can lessen your chance of being a victim of a violent crime.
Reduce your Chances of Being a Victim
Follow your intuition - trust your feelings. If you feel that a situation is not right, move out of the situation.
Be aware of your surroundings. In social situations, be alert to places and situations that make you vulnerable.
Walk confidently and alertly.
What Should I Do if I am Confronted?
Do whatever you can to protect yourself. However, It is not worth a fight to keep property.
If someone tries to grab you, make a scene. Scream, kick, fight .... do what you can to get away and attract attention.
If someone demands money, it might seem like a good idea to tell him that you don’t have any. However, this technique may actually backfire. Carry a little money separate from your other funds in an accessible place.
If someone demands property of yours - purse, ipod, bicycle - and says that he has a weapon, don’t resist. You have a greater chance of getting hurt if you do resist, and usually the robber will get your property anyway.
